I read about Bluetooth. What it is. How it works.
And I learned that it transmits information by encoding data into radio waves (in the 2.4GHz ISM band) and emitting them through the air. Which are then picked up by other devices that can receive and decode that information.
One other cool thing I learned about Bluetooth is what is called "frequency hopping". Frequency hopping solves the problem of different Bluetooth device signals interfering with each other. And to solve this, Bluetooth switches between different radio wave channels (or frequencies) 1600x per second!
I also read a little bit about it's security. How easy is it to spy or intercept Bluetooth data? From what I read there are security concerns (like sending and or extracting data from unsolicited devices, control devices without pairing, hijack a device's encryption keys). One benefit of Bluetooth's 10-100 meter connection range is that, in general, attackers need to be nearby to hijack a Bluetooth device.
In general, Bluetooth technology is safe to use for most common uses (headphones, keyboards and mice). Risks to be aware of include using old, outdated devices and pairing with unknown devices.
Learning about Bluetooth because I'm curious about the technology, and more importantly, I'm curious about how safe it is and how well it can keep user's brain activity private.
